Today we are in Brussels, where we're stopping over briefly since we're flying out of here to Dublin in the morning. Chad has been here before, but it's my first time. The city isn't that exciting, but we managed to squeeze some fun out of it.
First, lunch with a rock star. No, seriously. Second from the left is Yves, who was in the very famous Belgian band Urban Trad. He did a rotary exchange to Salmon Arm back in the day and went to high school with Chad. On the left is his wife Virginie and on the right is his nephew, Sehmat (I'm sure I've spelled that wrong). He was a very gracious host in Brussels who took us to a lovely brasserie for lunch where he and Chad got to catch up.
We're also spending some downtime (hence the number of posts today) in our apartment. We've been using booking.com a lot. Sometimes you miss in a huge way (ahem, Ghent), but sometimes you hit - like tonight when we got a big, nice apartment for cheap and were actually able to cook our own dinner (thank you, Chad!) Even inside we can enjoy the gorgeous weather, as the windows open wide. Plus, it's five minutes from the train station, which will be handy for our early-ish flight.
We tried to visit the Cantillon brewery, but since today is May Day (labour day in Belgium), it was shut. Luckily, the beer cafe Moeder Lambic Fontainas was open, where we were able to sample Cantillon from the cask and a number of other tasty, fresh Belgian beers. If you're interested, Chad will probably nerd out about it shortly with a post over at hoplogblog.blogspot.ca.
Yummy, yummy lambic...
Photographic evidence that we did the right thing (tourist wise) and also visited the Grand Place.
And took an obligatory shot of Mannekin Pis, a cherub fountain that the tourists go crazy for. Apparently so do the Belgians. This thing is tiny, but they dress it up in outfits several times a week including judo attire and an organ builder outfit. See the Wikipedia entry if you don't believe me - I don't get it either!
And that's it for Belgium. We have had a great time, but are very much looking forward to continuing with our travels in the Emerald Isle!
