California Dreaming

When planning this road trip, I pulled my usual trick of vastly overestimating how much we would be able to cram into three weeks.  I envisioned us driving all the way to San Francisco, visiting friends for a few days, and then cruising our way back up the coast, wind in our hair... Alas, while we did make it to California, it ended up being just a quick visit to the redwoods on the northwest coast and lunch in rainy Crescent City.

While I've visited Muir Woods near San Francisco a couple times, this time it was a little more up close and personal with the redwoods.

Me and the giant tree.  The guys in this forest are up to 20 feet in diameter.

Giant roots of a fallen redwood.

Chad in a redwood cave.

Tree tops.  A whole ecosystem exists up there.

On the ground, these larger than usual shamrocks give the forest an Irish flair.
After our visit, we headed for the coast and had lunch in Crescent City.  So much for sunny California - it rained the entire time we were there!  And with that, we headed back to Oregon to the much famed coast.  Here we say hello to the sand and ocean on our first roadside stop.

Sand and dunes as far as the eye can see.

Chad sheds his shoes as we enjoy a break from the rain.

Dune climbing, purse in hand.

Given the rain, tenting that evening looked less tempting than usual.
